Houthi Militia Enforces Media Suppression with Closure of “Samaa Ibb” Radio Station

Houthi Militia Closes Local Radio Station “Samaa Ibb”

The Houthi militia has shut down the local radio station “Samaa Ibb” in the city of Ibb, just weeks after it began broadcasting. This action underscores the militia’s ongoing policy of media suppression in the regions under its control. The group has consistently responded harshly to any dissenting voices, further tightening its grip on information dissemination.

Closure of the Radio Station and Reasons Behind the Decision

According to media sources, the militia closed the station in early April without providing any explanations. Initially, the station’s operators committed to broadcasting programs and content that aligned with the militia’s agenda. This abrupt closure highlights the militia’s intolerance for any form of independent media within areas it governs.

Control Over Media Discourse and Journalist Reactions

Reports indicate that the closure is part of the militia’s broader efforts to impose a singular narrative that serves its sectarian agenda. As pressure mounts on journalists and activists in the province, it becomes increasingly evident that the Houthis aim to dominate the media landscape.

Khaled Al-Faqih, a journalist involved with the station, confirmed that the closure occurred on the afternoon of April 2. He described the project as a “beautiful dream that remains unfulfilled.” Although the reasons for the decision remain undisclosed, the closure reflects the Houthis’ intent to solidify their control over media outlets.

It is important to note that the Houthi militia has previously closed several local radio stations in Ibb, including “Samara FM” and “Alwan FM.” These actions are part of the militia’s broader strategy to silence opposing voices, hindering efforts to promote freedom of expression in the regions they dominate. The closure of “Samaa Ibb” exemplifies the ongoing challenges faced by media professionals in Houthi-controlled areas, raising serious concerns about the future of free speech in Yemen.
