Ministers Inaugurate Facilities
Today, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Salem Abdullah Al-Saqtri and Water and Environment Minister Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi inaugurated two new fish landing centers in the Huf and Damqut areas of Al-Mahra Governorate. They also laid the foundation stone for an ice factory at the Damqut fish landing center.
Project Collaboration and Goals
These initiatives stem from a partnership involving the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water, the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, and the local authority in Al-Mahra. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implements these projects. Their primary goal is to enhance the infrastructure of the fishing sector and improve services for fishermen.
Facility Features and Benefits
During the inauguration, Al-Saqtri, Al-Sharjabi, and other officials, including Al-Mahra Local Council Secretary General Salem Nimer and FAO Representative in Yemen Adam Yao, toured the new fish landing centers. They observed the facilities designed to streamline fish landing and marketing processes, maintain product quality, and create a conducive working environment for fishermen.
Ice Factory to Boost Economic Value
The ministers also laid the foundation for the ice factory at the Damqut center. This facility will provide fishermen with essential ice for preserving their catch, reducing waste, and enhancing the economic value of fish products.
Local Official’s Praise for Initiatives
Salem Nimer, the Secretary General of the Al-Mahra Local Council, praised the significance of these projects in supporting the fishing sector. He emphasized that they represent a qualitative addition to the infrastructure in the Huf district, improving the livelihoods of fishermen and promoting economic development. Nimer also acknowledged the FAO and GEF’s contributions to the region’s developmental projects.
The opening of these fish landing centers and the establishment of the ice factory mark a significant step forward for Al-Mahra’s fishing industry. These developments promise to enhance the quality of services provided to local fishermen, ultimately benefiting the community and the economy.
