Hamas Political Leader Ismail Haniyeh Assassinated

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, announced the death of its political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran.

In a statement, Hamas mourned “the brother, the martyr leader, the mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, who was killed following a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran, after his participation in the inauguration celebration of the new Iranian president.”

Taher Al-Nono, a senior Hamas official, told Agence France-Presse that “the targeting by the occupation holds responsibility, and so does the United States.” He further stated that this was “a direct targeting of leader Ismail Haniyeh at his location in Tehran.”

“The assassination was carried out by means that will be identified and detailed by the brothers in Iran who are conducting investigations. We in Hamas are being kept informed of these investigations and their outcomes,” he added.

Abdelsalam Haniyeh, the son of the Hamas political bureau chief, stated that his father “achieved what he wished for.” Speaking to Al-Aqsa Radio, affiliated with Hamas, he said, “We are in a revolution and continuous struggle against the occupation. The resistance will not end with the assassination of the leadership, and Hamas will continue to resist until liberation.”

Iranian state media quoted the former commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rezaei, saying, “Israel will pay a heavy price” for the assassination of Haniyeh.

This development marks a significant escalation in the region, reflecting the ongoing tensions and the complex geopolitical dynamics involving Israel, Iran, and Palestinian factions.
