Microsoft has revealed a new generation of computers designed specifically to run artificial intelligence models and agents locally, eliminating the need for cloud services. This announcement took place during a tech event in San Francisco as part of Tech Week.
The starting price for the Surface Laptop Ultra is $2,600, available in two main configurations:
The highest configuration reaches $5,900 but has already sold out. This device features the new Nvidia RTX Spark chip and targets developers who require the ability to run AI models directly on their machines.
The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box starts at $6,000. It comes equipped with development tools such as VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7. This device is designed to run AI models locally without incurring cloud operating fees, featuring enhancements in cooling and unified memory.
Microsoft introduced a new feature called Execution Containers, which provides isolated environments for securely running AI agents. This feature establishes clear boundaries regarding what these agents can access within the system. CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that this feature will be available to all Windows 11 users, emphasizing the need for a coordination layer that integrates models, context, memory, and actions.
Microsoft offers a discount of up to $1,000 for those who trade in their MacBook Pro when purchasing the new devices. This initiative comes amid the growing prevalence of Mac devices among developers in Silicon Valley.
Dell has unveiled the XPS 16 Creator Edition, equipped with the RTX Spark processor, priced at $3,800, and is available for pre-order.
These devices reflect a rapidly accelerating trend of shifting AI operations from the cloud to local machines. They provide the necessary hardware and software capabilities to run advanced models and agents locally.
