Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, met today with Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen. They discussed the latest political and military developments, as well as the economic and humanitarian situations in the country.
Ambassador Al-Saadi emphasized that the struggle faced by Yemenis aims to prevent the Houthi terrorist militias from continuing to threaten Yemen, the region, and the world. He noted that the militias have rejected peace initiatives and opted for military escalation, persistently targeting civilians, infrastructure, and civilian sites in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. This behavior poses a threat to regional security and international navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The ambassador pointed out that the Yemeni government has provided numerous opportunities for peace and de-escalation. However, the militias responded with increased mobilization and aggression, placing the state before its national and constitutional responsibilities. He stressed that the government’s goal is to restore state institutions, assert authority over all Yemeni territory and its territorial waters, protect citizens, and end the situation where the decision of war and peace remains outside the state’s control.
Regarding the political path, Al-Saadi affirmed that the government has never rejected the option of peace. However, past experiences have shown that temporary ceasefires without addressing the root causes of the conflict do not lead to sustainable peace. He stated that it is unacceptable for an armed militia to control state institutions and use Yemeni territory to threaten both Yemenis and neighboring countries, as well as international navigation.
Al-Saadi clarified that the desired political settlement must lead to an effective state, achieving a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace that restores state institutions and fulfills the aspirations of the Yemeni people. It should also end the Houthi coup.
For his part, Grundberg reviewed his assessment of the latest developments and the efforts made by his office, as well as the prospects for the political process in light of current events.
Both sides reiterated the importance of ongoing communication and consultation regarding developments in Yemen and efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people.
