Marib Governor Leads Extensive Meeting with Humanitarian Partners
Collaborative Efforts to Address Humanitarian Crisis
On Thursday, Sultan al-Aradah, the Governor of Marib and member of the Presidential Leadership Council, chaired a comprehensive meeting with directors and representatives from various United Nations and international organizations active in humanitarian relief, along with concerned executive offices and the Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps in Marib province. The session, attended by the Deputy Governor Dr. Abd Rabbo Miftah, focused on the escalating humanitarian situation in the province amidst ongoing conflict, climate change, and economic decline. The discussions highlighted the significant reduction in humanitarian interventions due to a marked decrease in donor funding and stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships between local authorities and humanitarian partners to address the crisis, which has seen Marib accommodate over 62% of the displaced population.
Praise for Humanitarian Efforts and Call for Enhanced Partnerships
Al-Aradah commended the humanitarian efforts of UN, international, and local organizations in supporting the local authority to meet humanitarian needs and alleviate the suffering of displaced persons and host communities. He emphasized the need for enhanced partnerships and expanded interventions in the province to tackle challenges amid the continuous influx of displaced individuals due to the escalation of violence and forced displacement by Houthi militias.
Integration of Local and International Response Plans
The Governor underscored the importance of incorporating the local authority’s humanitarian response plan, launched last month, into the UN’s humanitarian response plan for Yemen until 2025. He highlighted the significant displacement to Marib, the continuing economic crisis, and the inadequate humanitarian interventions across various sectors, urging for a comprehensive approach to address the living conditions of both displaced individuals and host communities.
Government Commitment and Organizational Support
The Presidential Leadership Council member affirmed the government and local authorities’ continued support, assistance, and facilitation to UN, international, and local organizations and partners in humanitarian and developmental efforts. He stressed the importance of transitioning from emergency humanitarian interventions to recovery, community empowerment, sustainable development, and enhancing institutional capacities to provide basic services and respond to the needs of displaced persons and host communities.
Organizations Acknowledge Local Authority Support
Representatives of the organizations acknowledged the significant facilitation provided by the local authority, highlighting the challenges faced in humanitarian work within the province and the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis affecting displaced people and host communities. They emphasized the need for stronger partnerships and a greater role for organizations in securing funding for both emergency and sustainable humanitarian intervention projects.
This meeting marks a critical step towards addressing the humanitarian challenges in Marib, emphasizing the collective effort required from both local authorities and international partners to navigate the province’s pressing humanitarian needs effectively.
