Today, Yemen’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Shai Al-Zandani, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The meeting focused on the latest developments in Yemen, particularly the ongoing peace efforts and the necessary actions to halt the violations committed by the Houthi militia.

Acknowledging the UN’s Role in Yemen

During the discussion, Minister Al-Zandani praised the United Nations for its vital role in supporting the peace process in Yemen. He expressed the Yemeni government’s gratitude for the international community’s stance against the Houthi militia’s attacks and violations, especially those targeting civilians and humanitarian workers. Recently, the militia has continued to detain UN staff and humanitarian organization employees, raising serious concerns.

Addressing Maritime Security Threats

The minister also highlighted the increasing threats posed by Houthi terrorist attacks on commercial vessels and oil tankers in the Red Sea. He emphasized that these assaults represent a significant escalation, undermining international navigation security in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Al-Zandani called for a firm international response to deter these serious violations of international law.

Enhancing International Presence in Aden

Furthermore, Minister Al-Zandani stressed the importance of strengthening the presence of international organizations in Yemen. He urged these organizations to resume their activities from the temporary capital, Aden, to ensure effective coordination with state institutions. This approach aims to facilitate the equitable and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to all citizens across the country.

UN’s Commitment to Peace in Yemen

In response, Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting efforts to end the war and achieve lasting peace in Yemen. He emphasized that these efforts aim to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and promote security and stability in both Yemen and the broader region.

Attendees of the Meeting

The meeting also included Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, and the Foreign Minister’s Special Advisor, Counselor Salem Baafi.
