On Sunday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed U.S. Ambassador Stephen Fagin. The meeting aimed to discuss and enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between Yemen and the United States.
During their discussions, President Alimi and Ambassador Fagin explored various facets of their partnership, focusing particularly on addressing shared security threats. Key issues included securing international shipping lanes and supporting Yemen’s government in achieving economic and institutional stability. A significant topic of concern was the urgent need to end the insurgency of the Houthi militia, which continues to receive backing from the Iranian regime.
President Alimi commended the substantial progress in Yemen-U.S. relations and expressed his gratitude for the ongoing American support for the Yemeni people and their political leadership. He notably recognized the U.S. designation of the Houthi militia as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and the subsequent actions taken against its financing and smuggling networks.
President Alimi elaborated on the government’s ongoing efforts in financial and administrative reforms. He emphasized the importance of mitigating the impact of regional changes on the living conditions in Yemen. In his remarks, Alimi called for sustained American and international support at all levels, acknowledging the pivotal role of Saudi Arabia and its commendable stance alongside the Yemeni people during various challenges.
In a notable warning, President Alimi cautioned that the current calm following the Iranian regime’s setbacks could enable its militias to regroup. He expressed concerns that these groups might exploit the situation to negotiate more favorable terms for themselves.
Further, President Alimi stressed the necessity of dismantling narratives propagated by groups affiliated with Iranian ideology. He noted that these factions often attempt to transform defeats into perceived victories and capitalize on periods of tranquility to reposition themselves, rather than altering their destabilizing behaviors that threaten regional security and the welfare of its people.
The meeting concluded with Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, present, underscoring the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation between Yemen and the United States.
