Celebrations Erupt Across Syria Following Appointment of Ahmad al-Shara as Transitional President

On Wednesday evening, cities across Syria erupted in celebrations following the appointment of Ahmad al-Shara as the new transitional president. This significant political shift has sparked widespread joy among citizens, who gathered in public spaces to express their support.

Crowds Gather in Damascus

In the heart of the capital, Damascus, the Umayyad Square witnessed a large celebratory gathering. Supporters waved Syrian flags and chanted slogans in favor of al-Shara while expressing their discontent with the Assad regime.

Ziad Ali, a participant in a car parade through the streets of Damascus, described the scene: “Hundreds of cars cruised through the neighborhoods of the capital, proudly displaying the Syrian flag amidst a joyful atmosphere.”

Ali, a resident of the Baramkeh district, shared with the German news agency (dpa) that “everyone in the neighborhood exchanged congratulations on social media, and hundreds gathered in Baramkeh Square to celebrate, forming traditional dance circles despite the chilly weather.”

Celebrations Extend to New Areas

In the city of Jdeidet Artouz, located west of Damascus, residents took to the streets in response to the announcement of al-Shara’s appointment. Hundreds participated in both car and foot parades, showcasing their enthusiasm.

Mustafa Abdullah from Raqqa joined the celebrations, proudly waving the Syrian flag while chanting, “Hold your head high, you are a free Syrian – we will crush them, we will crush the Assad regime.” Abdullah urged President al-Shara to focus on liberating Raqqa, Hasakah, and Deir ez-Zor from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), emphasizing that these regions are integral parts of Syria and should not be divided.

A Night of Anticipation

As night fell, a curfew was imposed across Syrian cities at 8 PM local time, with citizens eagerly awaiting a victory speech from President al-Shara.

Judge Abdullah Saad in Aleppo commented on the day’s developments, stating, “The decisions announced today, including the dissolution of the army and security agencies, as well as the suspension of the 2012 constitution, reflect the natural outcome of revolutionary factions gaining control.”

Saad further asserted to dpa that the ongoing celebrations in various cities signify a legitimization of Ahmad al-Shara’s leadership. He expressed optimism about al-Shara’s potential to serve the country effectively, aligning with the revolutionary factions’ decision to appoint him as president.

The appointment of Ahmad al-Shara as transitional president has ignited a wave of celebrations across Syria, highlighting a significant moment in the country’s ongoing political landscape. As citizens express their hopes for a brighter future, the atmosphere remains charged with anticipation for the changes that lie ahead.
