On Thursday, a shooting incident in Old Ibb City resulted in injuries to two young men, underscoring the alarming security crisis in the province, which remains under the control of Houthi militia. This event raises concerns regarding the increasing prevalence of violence and lawlessness in the area.
According to local sources, the incident began when a qat seller named Diaa Al-Afeef lured his colleague, Moath Akram Abad, to his home located in the Al-Mashhad neighborhood on Awqaf Street. Al-Afeef falsely claimed that he intended to mediate a reconciliation between Abad and his brother, Ammar Al-Afeef, who had accompanied him due to a previous dispute. Once inside the house, the brothers physically assaulted Abad.
Following the assault, the brothers opened fire indiscriminately, injuring both Moath and his colleague, Bilal Al-Muhtadi, who was also present at the scene. Emergency services swiftly transported the injured individuals to a local hospital for necessary medical treatment. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting, evading capture.
This shooting incident is indicative of a troubling trend of violence in Ibb Province, exacerbated by the lack of effective security measures. The prevailing lawlessness has increased the risk of violence and contributed to the proliferation of firearms among residents. There is an urgent need for intervention from the relevant authorities to restore security and stability in the region.
