Arab Parliament to develop a guiding Arab law on alternative sanctions.

Rejecting Politicization of Human Rights

Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Asoumi, President of the Arab Parliament and Chairman of the Arab Human Rights Observatory, has strongly voiced opposition against the politicization of human rights by Western countries. This stance comes particularly in light of the weak Western responses to the events in Gaza since October 7. Al-Asoumi emphasizes the Observatory’s commitment to collaborating with national and Arab institutions working in the field of human rights. The goal is to present a unified Arab voice that clarifies facts, highlights the achievements of Arab countries in human rights, and shares their experiences in addressing challenges.

Strengthening Cooperation

During a meeting with a delegation from the National Institution for Human Rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, led by Deputy Ahmed Sabah Al-Saloum and member Roda Al-Aradi, discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination. This meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the delegation’s visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, aimed to explore Egypt’s experiences in the “Decent Life” program and its reform and rehabilitation centers.

Highlighting Arab Innovations

Al-Asoumi pointed out the distinguished Arab experiences in the field of alternative sanctions, particularly praising the initiatives of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain. These initiatives include the enactment of laws focused on alternative punishments and measures for reintegration into society, avoiding freedom-depriving penalties. Furthermore, Al-Asoumi announced the Observatory’s intention to develop an Arab model law on alternative sanctions and reintegration, reflecting the advancements in human rights in business and prioritizing the development of guiding Arab legislation in this area.

Annual Conference for Exchange of Expertise

The Arab Parliament’s president called for leveraging Bahrain’s experience and other notable Arab initiatives in human rights through an annual conference organized by the Arab Human Rights Observatory. This event aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise and initiatives, respecting Arab particularities. It was agreed that this year’s conference would coincide with the United Nations Human Rights Council session in early October 2024.

This proactive approach by the Arab Parliament and the Arab Human Rights Observatory underscores a significant effort towards enhancing human rights practices and legislation across the Arab world, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing successful experiences and facing challenges with a united front.
