Tragic Death Under Torture
The Yemeni Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, condemned the Houthi militia’s actions in the recent death of a soldier, Mohammed Mohammed Abdullah Suleiman, aged 36. Suleiman, a resident of Jabal Al-Sharq in Dhamar Governorate, died while held captive under horrific conditions.

In a press statement, Al-Eryani emphasized that this heinous crime adds to the extensive list of violations committed by the Houthi militia. It serves as a stark reminder of the suffering endured by thousands of individuals who remain kidnapped, detained, or forcibly disappeared in the militia’s illegal facilities.

Details of the Incident
Reports indicate that the Houthi militia captured soldier Mohammed Suleiman on June 4, 2020, at the Sarwah front. Throughout his detention at the Central Security prison, overseen by Abdulqader Al-Murtada, the head of the so-called “Prisoners’ Affairs Committee,” Suleiman endured severe psychological and physical torture. His health deteriorated significantly during this time. On November 9, 2024, the militia contacted Suleiman’s family to inform them of his death due to brutal torture.

Human Rights Violations
Al-Eryani highlighted that the Ministry of Human Rights has documented over 350 cases of torture-related deaths among a total of 1,635 torture incidents reported in Houthi detention centers. Specialized human rights organizations recorded that at least 32 detainees faced extrajudicial killings, while others resorted to suicide to escape the extreme brutality of their conditions. Additionally, 79 detainees died from neglect, and 31 suffered fatal heart attacks due to inadequate medical care.

Call for International Action
Al-Eryani urged the international community, the United Nations, its special envoy to Yemen, and human rights organizations to break their disturbing silence. He called for a strong condemnation of these war crimes and crimes against humanity. He also demanded genuine pressure be applied on the Houthi militia to release all political prisoners unconditionally. Furthermore, Al-Eryani advocated for the immediate designation of the Houthi militia as a “global terrorist organization” to support the Yemeni government in restoring security and stability across the country.
