In a strong condemnation, Yemen’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Ma’mar al-Eryani, denounced the assassination of Sheikh Sadiq Ahmed Saleh Abu Shaar by the Iran-backed Houthi militia. The incident occurred while the tribal leader was driving through a checkpoint in the Dar Salm area, south of the capital, Sana’a. This act represents yet another grim chapter in the ongoing violence perpetrated by the Houthis against the Yemeni people.
Al-Eryani highlighted that this heinous crime reflects an alarming increase in violence, including murder, theft, and oppression, inflicted by the Houthi militia on civilians in Sana’a and other areas under their control. He criticized the sustained and unjustified silence from the international community regarding these atrocities.
The minister urged the international community, the United Nations, its special envoy, and human rights organizations to break their silence. He emphasized that this silence has emboldened the Houthi militia to continue their brutal campaign against civilians. Al-Eryani called for the immediate classification of the Houthis as a “global terrorist organization,” the freezing of their assets, and the pursuit of their leaders and members involved in these crimes and violations.
Al-Eryani’s statements underscore the urgent need for international intervention to address the escalating violence in Yemen. As the situation deteriorates, the call for accountability and action against the Houthi militia becomes increasingly critical for the safety and security of Yemeni civilians.
