The Taiz Human Rights Center has reported the displacement of 331 families in the Mawza district, with over 100 additional families fleeing their homes. This mass exodus stems from extensive violations committed by Houthi militias during July and August 2026. The violence has also resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians and injuries to 11 others, including women and children.
Escalation Against Civilians and Civilian Infrastructure
The report highlights a serious escalation in violence, including direct sniper fire, artillery and missile attacks, the use of explosive drones, and landmine planting. These attacks have targeted residential neighborhoods, homes, schools, mosques, displacement camps, farms, and private properties.
Ballistic and Drone Attacks on Al-Mokha Port
According to the report, Al-Mokha Port has faced a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks. These assaults resulted in the deaths of seven port employees and significant damage to the dock and several facilities. Additionally, ships, boats, and maritime equipment sustained damage, leading to a complete halt of commercial and maritime activities and leaving approximately 1,000 workers unemployed.
The militias also targeted the Al-Ardi Port in Bab al-Mandab, launching six missiles at the commercial vessel Amir Khan while it was docked, causing severe damage and rendering the port inoperable.
Shelling of Villages and Displacement Camps Across Multiple Districts
The center documented shelling in the villages of Maqbana, Mawza, Al-Shuqayq, Al-Mokha, and the city of Taiz. The report noted the impact of ballistic missiles near a school and residential gatherings, as well as attacks on Al-Jil Al-Jadeed School and displacement camps in Mawza.
More than 100 families have been forced to seek shelter in rocky cliffs and rugged mountainous areas, while 331 families have officially displaced in Mawza, according to field observations.
Urgent Calls for International Intervention
The center concluded that these incidents reflect a persistent pattern of Houthi violations, warning that civilian lives remain at risk, especially with the use of wide-impact weapons in populated areas.
The organization urged the United Nations, the international community, and human rights organizations to:
- Condemn the violations against civilians in Taiz.
- Hold those responsible accountable.
- Provide protection for civilians and prevent attacks on civilian infrastructure.
- Remove landmines and war remnants.
- Offer support to victims and displaced individuals and facilitate reparations.
