Two individuals sustained injuries, and dozens of fishing boats suffered destruction due to a large fire at Manta Port, one of Ecuador’s key fishing hubs along the Pacific coast. The incident has raised significant concerns in the region, resulting in substantial financial losses and jeopardizing the livelihoods of many fishermen.
Ecuador’s Risk Management Agency reported that firefighters successfully contained the blaze after extensive efforts. However, investigations continue to determine the circumstances and causes of the fire. Preliminary information indicates that flames engulfed at least 35 boats, primarily small to medium-sized vessels made from highly flammable materials.
The fire produced towering flames and thick plumes of black smoke, negatively impacting the local environment. Additionally, it caused severe damage to port facilities, disrupting fishing activities and affecting the local economy. This incident highlights the urgent need to enhance safety measures at ports, particularly those reliant on maritime activities.
Authorities are currently assessing the damage inflicted on the port and have initiated investigations into the fire’s origins. These inquiries are expected to contribute to improved preventive measures in the future. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on supporting affected fishermen, as this profession serves as a primary source of income for many families in the area.
