The Republic of Yemen has reiterated its strong commitment to peaceful solutions for resolving conflicts while firmly opposing occupation and interference in the internal affairs of nations. Yemen emphasized that the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Arab territories constitutes a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and remains a persistent source of regional and international instability.
This declaration came during a statement made by Yemen on behalf of Arab nations at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The assembly convened to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter. Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, delivered the address.
Ambassador Al-Saadi expressed deep regret over the UN’s inability to end the longest occupation in contemporary history, despite eight decades since its establishment. He reaffirmed full support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The ambassador noted that the establishment of the UN in 1945 provided a crucial platform for promoting international peace and security, protecting human rights, and supporting development. He stated, "This celebration serves as an opportunity to renew our collective commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter." He highlighted that the signing of the UN Charter marked a pivotal moment in modern history, reflecting humanity’s aspiration to overcome the tragedies of war and foster coexistence among nations while respecting state sovereignty.
Al-Saadi stressed the importance of respecting fundamental rights and freedoms in a comprehensive and balanced manner. He called for consideration of cultural and religious sensitivities while ensuring civilian protection and achieving justice and accountability in accordance with international law. He also reiterated the Arab nations’ commitment to implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
The ambassador welcomed the UN Secretary-General’s initiatives aimed at reforming the international financial system. He urged the activation of financing mechanisms, technology transfer, and capacity-building to empower developing countries in addressing challenges and achieving desired development within a framework of international partnership and justice.
Ambassador Al-Saadi emphasized the need to move beyond symbolic gestures to tangible actions based on justice and fairness. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change, pandemics, food and energy crises, and violent extremism.
He stated that reforming the UN system, particularly the Security Council, has become an urgent necessity to enhance the effectiveness of the international system. Al-Saadi reiterated the Arab nations’ demand for permanent Arab representation in the Security Council with full powers, including the veto right, should the council expand in the future.
Al-Saadi added that fair representation requires proportional Arab representation in the non-permanent seats of an expanded council. He emphasized that this should be based on equitable criteria, including the population density of Arab countries, their number in UN membership, and their active role in maintaining international peace and security. He noted that many issues before the Security Council relate directly to the Arab region.
The ambassador reaffirmed the Arab group’s commitment to multilateralism and the UN’s pivotal role in addressing issues of peace, security, development, and human rights. He emphasized the importance of supporting a rules-based international system and enhancing international cooperation grounded in mutual respect and equitable partnerships. Al-Saadi expressed the Arab group’s support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his efforts to revitalize multilateralism and reform the UN system to better respond to the aspirations of the world’s peoples.
It is noteworthy that the Republic of Yemen currently chairs the Arab group at the United Nations for the month of June.
