Yemen Participates in Launch of Second Phase of British Support Mechanism
The Republic of Yemen recently participated in the launch of the second phase of the British Support Mechanism for Yemen (YSF). This two-day summit took place in Amman, Jordan, and featured the attendance of Yemen’s Ambassador to Jordan, Dr. Jalal Faqira, along with the UK Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif. Several diplomats and representatives from international organizations focused on Yemen’s situation also joined the event.
Acknowledging UK Support
Ambassador Faqira expressed Yemen’s gratitude to the UK government for its ongoing support through various British aid mechanisms. He emphasized the importance of this assistance during Yemen’s critical period, marked by the devastating war imposed by the Iran-backed Houthi militia. This conflict has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises globally. Additionally, maritime piracy has threatened international navigation in the Red Sea, undermining regional and global security. The war has caused extensive destruction to Yemen’s infrastructure, including ports, airports, factories, and power plants, with damages exceeding tens of billions of dollars.
Strengthening Partnerships
The ambassador highlighted that the UK’s support reflects a broad partnership across multiple sectors. This includes humanitarian response conferences, technical assistance, development initiatives, scholarships, and governmental reforms aimed at rallying international support for Yemen. He noted that the second phase of the Yemen Support Mechanism (YSF2) demonstrates the professionalism observed in the first phase.
Key Components of the Support Mechanism
Faqira explained that the three components of the support project are crucial for addressing Yemen’s fundamental gaps. These components focus on empowering women, supporting local governance, and creating a secure environment that enables national institutions at both local and central levels to fulfill their responsibilities.
Closing Remarks
In closing, Ambassador Faqira thanked UK Ambassador Abda Sharif, International Support Mechanism (ISF) head Gavin Saunders, and the project team leader for YSF2. He also expressed appreciation for the experts who contributed to the project’s design and those participating in the workshop.
This summit marks a significant step in reinforcing international support for Yemen as it navigates through its ongoing challenges.
