Minister of Water and Environment Discusses Water Supply Enhancements in Yemen
In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi engaged with Dr. Mohammed Eidros, Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). The discussion focused on finalizing steps for a project aimed at enhancing water supply in Taiz Governorate, funded by the Climate Adaptation Fund.
Project Goals and Infrastructure Improvements
The meeting outlined a comprehensive action plan designed to improve access to drinking water in Taiz City. This initiative will support infrastructure development and enhance the region’s capacity to adapt to climate changes. Additionally, the project aims to alleviate the humanitarian suffering caused by water scarcity and improve irrigation methods in areas surrounding Taiz. By introducing modern irrigation networks and supporting local farmers, the project seeks to reduce water loss and boost agricultural productivity.
Addressing Water Crisis in Taiz
Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the project’s importance as a pivotal step toward mitigating the long-standing water crisis in Taiz. He highlighted the need for a thorough study of water sources in the upper basin of the Rasyan Valley, which encompasses Taiz City and its surrounding areas. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing Taiz in its plans and programs, particularly given the complex humanitarian and living challenges the city faces, especially in water and energy supply.
Government Commitment to Sustainable Solutions
Al-Sharjabi noted that support from the Climate Adaptation Fund will enable the implementation of impactful interventions that enhance community resilience and contribute to achieving long-term water security.
Collaboration with International Partners
In a related discussion, Minister Al-Sharjabi met with Sande Anis, the Country Director of the French organization Triangle, to address water sector needs in the Maghras Najy field in Lahij Governorate. They also reviewed the status of the water pipeline from the Bir Ahmad field to the Al-Barzakh station in Aden.
During this meeting, Al-Sharjabi received updates from Anis on ongoing efforts and continuous coordination with relevant authorities. These efforts have successfully secured approval from the Crisis Center of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs for funding these essential needs.

Anis expressed gratitude for the support and assistance received from the Ministry of Water and Environment. He underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration to implement emergency water projects in priority areas.
