The Republic of Yemen participated today in a meeting of permanent representatives to the Arab League, alongside Chinese officials, held in Beijing. The Yemeni delegation, led by Dr. Ali Mousa, Yemen’s Chargé d’Affaires at the Arab League, focused on preparations for the upcoming second Arab-Chinese summit scheduled for mid-June.
The meeting, chaired by Qahatan Khalaf, Iraq’s Ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, addressed several issues of mutual interest. Participants explored ways to deepen Arab-Chinese relations and enhance cooperation across various political, economic, and developmental sectors.
Arab nations reaffirmed their full support for the timely convening of the second Arab-Chinese summit. They view this event as a strategic opportunity to strengthen Arab-Chinese cooperation and coordinate positions on regional and international issues, particularly the Palestinian cause.
In his address, Dr. Ali Mousa emphasized the strong historical and strategic ties between Yemen and the People’s Republic of China, which have lasted over seven decades. He expressed Yemen’s eagerness to expand cooperation, especially in reconstruction, infrastructure, and energy sectors.
Dr. Mousa highlighted the historical roots of Yemen-China relations, recalling the voyages of the Chinese mariner Zheng He to Yemeni ports. This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He praised China’s supportive role in Yemen’s development, education, and health sectors.
Dr. Mousa reiterated Yemen’s desire to engage more deeply in the Belt and Road Initiative, leveraging its strategic geographic position to enhance regional connectivity and facilitate international trade. He appreciated China’s steadfast support for Yemen’s unity and territorial integrity, as well as its backing for the Presidential Leadership Council led by President Rashad Mohammed Alimi.
The Chargé d’Affaires discussed the current challenges facing Yemen, attributing them to the Houthi militia’s coup, backed by the Iranian regime. He clarified that recent security measures, including the protection of military camps in Aden, Hadramout, and Al-Mahra, aim to safeguard state institutions and protect citizens from chaos, rather than display force.
Dr. Mousa affirmed that the legitimate government, with support from Saudi Arabia and the Coalition for Legitimacy, has successfully unified national ranks and addressed security gaps. He assured readiness to protect international waterways and deter terrorist threats.
The Yemeni representative emphasized that ending Houthi threats to international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab requires addressing the root causes of the crisis and restoring legitimacy. He urged the international community to support this path as a genuine guarantee for regional stability and the security of global trade routes.
Dr. Mousa expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China and Arab nations for their continued support of Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy. He looks forward to sustained assistance until comprehensive and lasting peace is achieved.
This meeting marks a significant step in fostering collaboration between Yemen and China, reinforcing the importance of international partnerships in addressing regional challenges.
