Yemen Participates in IAEA Board of Governors Meetings

Engagement in Global Nuclear Security

The Republic of Yemen marked its presence today at the meetings of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by its Ambassador to Vienna and Permanent Representative to the Agency, Haitham Shujaadin. The discussions focused on a range of critical issues including nuclear safety and security, the agency’s performance report, nuclear science and technology, the implementation of safeguards in Korea and Syria, Israel’s nuclear capabilities, and the situation in Ukraine.

Yemen’s Stance on Regional Security

During the discussions, Ambassador Shujaadin highlighted Yemen’s concerns regarding the verification and monitoring in Iran under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 of 2015. He pointed out Iran’s violations of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, reiterating Yemen’s firm rejection of maritime piracy and attacks by the Houthi militias, fully backed by the Iranian regime. These actions, primarily in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, not only benefit Iran but also pose a significant threat to international navigation and global peace and security.

Shujaadin emphasized that the Houthi attacks have militarized the Red Sea, compromising global trade freedom, harming the people in the region and worldwide, and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. This has also doubled the economic burdens on Yemen and many countries around the globe. He called for support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government against these threats.

Solidarity with the Palestinian People

Furthermore, Ambassador Shujaadin touched upon the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza and Rafah, condemning the recent escalation in the Gaza Strip. He strongly denounced the targeting of unarmed civilians and urged the international community to take a firm stance, compelling Israel to respect international humanitarian law and immediately open safe humanitarian corridors.

He stressed the importance of allowing unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid and medical supplies to alleviate the humanitarian disaster and prevent its worsening. Shujaadin affirmed that the only solution to the conflict is the two-state solution, establishing a Palestinian state in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Conclusion

Yemen’s participation in the IAEA Board of Governors meetings underscores its commitment to addressing global nuclear safety and security concerns. The country’s call for international cooperation against threats to peace and its solidarity with the Palestinian cause reflect its engagement in critical global issues, advocating for stability, security, and humanitarian principles on the international stage.
