Yemen participates in the 118th session of the Economic and Social Council at the ministerial level.

Yemen Calls for Unified Arab Strategy Against Trade Wars

Cairo, Egypt – Dr. Mohammed Al-Ashwal, Yemen’s Minister of Industry and Trade, urged the development of a unified Arab strategy to combat trade wars and threats targeting maritime routes and international trade pathways. He emphasized the need to address the risks posed by Iran and its militias in the region, which directly impact Arab economic and food security, as well as global trade.

Minister’s Address at Arab Economic Council

Dr. Al-Ashwal delivered his remarks during the 118th session of the Arab Economic and Social Council, held at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo. He led a delegation representing Yemen at this significant ministerial meeting.

Global Economic Changes Demand Collective Action

The minister highlighted the rapid changes in the global economy and the increasing trade wars threatening maritime routes. He called for a shift from individual responses to a more integrated and effective Arab economic and trade stance. This approach aims to protect Arab interests and enhance the region’s ability to confront shared risks and challenges.

National Security Tied to Economic Stability

Dr. Al-Ashwal stated, “Arab national security fundamentally relies on economic, trade, and food security, as well as the safety of maritime routes and trade activities in the region.” He warned that attacks on international trade routes and civilian infrastructure pose threats that extend beyond affected nations, impacting broader Arab and international economic interests.

Concerns Over Attacks on Al-Mokha Port

The minister pointed out the ongoing attacks on the city and port of Al-Mokha by Houthi militias using missiles and drones. He cautioned about the implications of these assaults on the security of the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and international shipping and trade. These actions represent a direct threat to ports and vital economic resources in the region.

Call for Unified Arab Efforts

Dr. Al-Ashwal called for a concerted effort among Arab nations to unify their positions and mobilize a more effective international trade stance against threats to maritime routes. He urged the World Trade Organization and its member states to play a more significant role in safeguarding the freedom and fluidity of international trade and the achievements of the global economy from attacks that undermine stability and development.

Acknowledgment of Leadership Changes

The minister congratulated Saudi Arabia on assuming the presidency of the current session and praised Algeria for its efforts during the previous presidency. He also commended the Arab League’s General Secretariat for its preparation and organization of the session’s activities.

Addressing Economic and Social Issues

The session discussed various economic and social issues on the agenda, focusing on enhancing Arab cooperation, economic integration, food security, and trade collaboration. Additionally, it aimed to support the industrial and trade institute to boost Yemen’s export sector as part of reconstruction and economic recovery efforts, addressing challenges affecting Arab economies and shared interests.

This article highlights Yemen’s proactive stance in addressing regional economic challenges and emphasizes the importance of collective action among Arab nations to ensure stability and security in trade and commerce.
