The Republic of Yemen recently participated in a regional workshop focused on food security and nutrition in the Middle East and North Africa. This event took place in Cairo, Egypt, from June 17 to 18, 2023. The Yemeni delegation was led by Ahmed Al-Zamki, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture for Irrigation and Land Reclamation.
During the workshop, representatives from 12 Arab countries, along with international and regional organizations and development partners, engaged in meaningful discussions. The Yemeni delegation presented a technical overview of the challenges facing food security in Yemen. They highlighted the ongoing efforts and strategies implemented to address these challenges effectively.
The Yemeni delegation emphasized the critical roles that agriculture and fisheries play in achieving food security and enhancing living standards. They discussed how support from donor countries and international organizations has significantly alleviated the severity of the food crisis in Yemen.
Furthermore, the Yemeni delegation announced the development of the National Food Security Strategy for 2023–2027. This strategy serves as a roadmap to tackle food insecurity in the country. The Ministry of Agriculture aims to implement this strategy in collaboration with local, regional, and international stakeholders. They stressed the importance of transitioning from humanitarian relief to sustainable development, particularly in productive sectors like agriculture and fisheries.
Yemen’s active participation in this workshop underscores its commitment to addressing food security challenges. By fostering collaboration and implementing strategic initiatives, Yemen aims to create a more stable and sustainable future for its citizens.
