The Republic of Yemen has been elected as the Vice President of the preparatory meeting for the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. This election took place during the preparatory meeting for West Asia, which concluded in Marrakech, Morocco. The decision highlights the appreciation of member states for Yemen’s commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at achieving criminal justice and crime prevention. These efforts align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, particularly Goal 16, which focuses on building safe and just societies.
In his address, Ambassador Haitham Shuja’ al-Din, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Vienna, emphasized Yemen’s ongoing commitment to institutional and judicial reforms. Despite the challenges posed by the Houthi militia’s insurgency, Yemen continues to implement significant reforms. These include enhancing judicial independence and empowering women within the justice sector. Ambassador Shuja’ al-Din also underscored the critical need for technical and financial support for developing countries to strengthen their capacities in these areas.
This preparatory meeting serves as a crucial step toward the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in April 2026. The conference aims to address pressing issues related to crime and justice on a global scale, fostering collaboration among nations to enhance safety and justice for all.
Yemen’s election as Vice President reflects its dedication to these vital international discussions and its role in promoting justice reform despite ongoing challenges.
