The Ministry of Health currently lacks a polio vaccination campaign this month.

Yemen Launches Expanded Polio Vaccination Campaign

The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has announced an extensive vaccination campaign against polio. This initiative will take place from July 12 to July 14, aiming to protect children across the nation.

Campaign Reach and Participation

Dr. Qassem Bahibeh, the Minister of Public Health and Population, shared insights with Yemen News Agency (Saba) regarding the campaign’s progress. He reported that health teams have successfully reached 1,345,317 children under the age of five. This achievement involved 6,924 health teams, supported by 13,003 health workers. The campaign has seen a significant increase in field supervisors, with 1,948 field supervisors and 2,400 district supervisors actively participating. Additionally, health teams managed to visit 1,029,674 homes during the challenging days of the blockade.

Call for Community Support

Minister Bahibeh emphasized the importance of collective efforts from both official and community sectors to ensure the campaign’s success. He highlighted that the Ministry of Health, with support from health partners, plays a crucial role in this national initiative to immunize children against polio. He described the campaign as a vital health measure to protect Yemen from this dangerous viral disease.

Importance of Health Education

The minister also underscored the significance of health education in promoting community awareness. He urged for targeted messages that build trust in vaccines and encourage community support for health teams. Bahibeh noted that community awareness serves as a fundamental pillar in combating misconceptions and fostering a supportive environment for health initiatives.

Engaging Community Leaders

In a renewed effort, the Minister convened a meeting with community leaders, journalists, educators, and mosque leaders. This gathering aimed to address barriers to vaccination and promote preventive awareness. Bahibeh stressed the importance of starting the vaccination campaign to safeguard future generations.

Commitment to Quality and Coordination

The Ministry is committed to enhancing the capabilities of health workers and ensuring a reliable cold chain for vaccine storage. Dr. Bahibeh highlighted the ministry’s adherence to the highest quality standards. He also mentioned close coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other health partners to implement effective strategies aimed at eradicating polio in Yemen.

This comprehensive approach reflects Yemen’s dedication to protecting its children and ensuring a healthier future for the nation.
