Yemen’s Displacement Crisis: Fourth Most Neglected Globally, Reports Norwegian Refugee Council

Yemen’s Displacement Crisis: A Global Oversight

A recent report from the Norwegian Refugee Council reveals that Yemen ranks fourth among countries experiencing neglect regarding displacement crises. This finding is part of the tenth edition of the Council’s annual report on overlooked displacement situations, released on Thursday. The report draws attention to the dire circumstances of individuals whose struggles frequently go unnoticed and who often receive inadequate or no assistance at all.

Key Findings of the Report

The Norwegian Refugee Council’s report indicates that Yemen follows Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Colombia on the list of the ten most neglected displacement crises for 2025. This ranking underscores the urgent need for the international community to provide increased attention and support for these vulnerable populations.

Humanitarian Aid Shortfalls

According to the report, the international community provided an average of less than $40 per person in need across the ten most neglected displacement crises last year. This sum falls short of the average requirement, which exceeds $52 per person. Such discrepancies highlight the inadequacy of humanitarian responses in effectively addressing the needs of displaced individuals.

Rising Displacement Figures

Statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reveal that the number of displaced persons in Yemen has surged to 5.2 million this year. Ongoing conflict and its humanitarian repercussions continue to drive this alarming increase, exacerbating the situation for those affected.

Funding Gaps Widen

The report further explains that a significant gap exists between humanitarian needs and available funding. A notable reduction in humanitarian financing has intensified the challenges faced by marginalized crises like Yemen’s, which already suffer from insufficient funding for each individual in need.

Conclusion

The findings from the Norwegian Refugee Council emphasize the critical need for the international community to prioritize neglected displacement crises, particularly in Yemen. Increased awareness and funding are essential to address the growing humanitarian needs of displaced populations in the region.
