Mine Clearance Operations in Yemen: 863 Mines Removed in One Week

The Maqsam Project, dedicated to demining efforts in Yemen, announced the successful removal of 863 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices during the first week of September. This achievement marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to clear Yemeni land of war remnants.

Weekly Operations Overview

According to a statement from the project’s media office, engineering teams accomplished the following during the past week:

  • 384 unexploded ordnance
  • 470 anti-tank mines
  • 6 anti-personnel mines
  • 3 explosive devices

Additionally, the teams cleared 194,994 square meters of contaminated land. These efforts aim to secure affected areas and facilitate the safe return of residents to their homes and activities.

Achievements in Midi District

In the Midi District of Hajjah Governorate, the operations room reported that project teams have removed a total of 13,036 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices since their work began in the district. The total area cleared in Midi now stands at 4,749,003 square meters.

Project Milestones Since Inception

Osama Al-Qusaybi, the project director, confirmed that since the project’s launch in late June 2018, teams have successfully removed 589,188 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices. This total includes:

  • 419,892 unexploded ordnance
  • 152,946 anti-tank mines
  • 7,681 anti-personnel mines
  • 8,669 explosive devices

Furthermore, the teams have cleared 85,198,170 square meters of Yemeni land, making this one of the largest demining operations in the region.

The ongoing efforts of the Maqsam Project continue to play a crucial role in ensuring safety and stability in Yemen, paving the way for a brighter future for its residents.
