The United States has enacted comprehensive economic sanctions targeting the entire Iranian aviation sector. Officials warn that entities engaging with Iranian airlines may also face penalties.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that all Iranian airlines are now subject to economic sanctions. This move represents the latest in a series of actions taken by Washington against Tehran.
Previously, two airlines, Mahan Air and Iran Air, were already under U.S. sanctions. The new measures extend to an additional 27 airlines operating locally or regionally.
The Treasury Department accused Iranian authorities of utilizing the aviation sector to transport weapons, personnel, and illicit goods. These serious allegations prompted the U.S. government to take decisive action.
In addition to the sanctions, the U.S. administration has decided to suspend several air transport exemptions. Notably, one exemption allowed non-U.S. airlines to operate U.S.-manufactured aircraft within Iran.
The sanctions also include two companies accused of acting as intermediaries to facilitate Mahan Air’s acquisition of three Boeing 777 aircraft during the summer of this year.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisenet emphasized that the country will continue to implement strict measures against those providing financial support to the Iranian regime. He noted that the new sanctions specifically target companies that persist in supporting Mahan Air.
Pisenet cautioned entities that engage with Iranian airlines about the risks of exclusion from the global financial system. All these airlines are now encompassed by the new sanctions, heightening the stakes for potential partners.
