UN Peacekeeping Forces Remain Committed to Lebanon
On Friday, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, reaffirmed that UN peacekeepers will continue their mission in Lebanon. He emphasized that withdrawing from their positions could lead to the risk of those areas being occupied by opposing parties.
UNIFIL’s Role in Southern Lebanon
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has maintained a presence in southern Lebanon since 1978, currently consisting of approximately 10,000 troops. Their primary responsibility involves monitoring the Blue Line, which serves as the border between Lebanon and Israel, a demarcation established by the UN in 2000.
Challenges Amid Escalating Tensions
In an interview with the UN’s media service, Lacroix acknowledged the increased intensity of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in recent weeks. Despite these challenges, he stated, “UNIFIL peacekeepers remain steadfast in their positions.” He highlighted the importance of their presence in maintaining stability in the region.
Israeli Request for Troop Withdrawal
Lacroix revealed that Israeli authorities recently requested UN troops to withdraw five kilometers from the Blue Line for their protection. However, the UN made a “rational decision” to keep the peacekeepers in place, as their presence is vital. He warned that abandoning these positions could lead to occupation by one side or the other, which would undermine the UN’s neutrality and impartiality.
Increase in Incidents Involving UNIFIL
On Wednesday, a UNIFIL spokesperson reported that the mission faced over 30 incidents since the beginning of October, with nearly 20 attributed to “gunfire or actions” by Israeli armed forces. Lacroix noted that facilities had suffered damage as a result, and since the start of Israel’s ground operation in Lebanon, eight peacekeepers have sustained injuries. Fortunately, all are reported to be in good condition, illustrating the dangers they face in the region.
The UN remains committed to its peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, despite the escalating violence. The presence of UNIFIL is crucial for maintaining stability and neutrality in a complex and volatile conflict zone.
