A recent report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reveals a staggering toll from the measles outbreak in Yemen. The report indicates that approximately 24,000 individuals suffered from the disease in 2025, marking one of the most severe global outbreaks in recent history.
From May to October 2025, Yemen recorded the highest number of measles cases worldwide. Health officials confirmed 23,817 cases, which included 214 fatalities. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for effective public health interventions.
Official data from areas under the internationally recognized government shows 16,360 infections and 106 deaths last year. In contrast, regions controlled by Houthi forces reported around 7,457 cases and 108 deaths. Observers suggest that these figures likely underestimate the true scale of the outbreak. Factors contributing to this discrepancy include a lack of transparency, inadequate epidemiological surveillance, and ongoing disruptions to vaccination programs.
The situation in Yemen underscores the critical need for enhanced healthcare measures and vaccination efforts. As the country grapples with this public health crisis, international support and resources become increasingly vital to combat the spread of measles and protect vulnerable populations.
