UN Report: Marib Hosts Over 35,000 Displaced Families from Ibb

A recent report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) highlights Marib’s ongoing status as the epicenter of internal displacement in Yemen. The province currently shelters more than 35,600 displaced families from Ibb alone, making it one of the largest reception points for displaced individuals in the country. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate due to ongoing conflict and economic collapse.

Marib: Yemen’s Largest Displacement Hub

According to a field survey conducted by the IOM in March and April 2026, Marib accommodates 301,065 displaced families in areas under the control of the legitimate government. Among these families, 35,614 hail from Ibb, accounting for 12% of the total displaced population in Marib. With an average family size of six, this translates to approximately 213,684 individuals displaced from Ibb residing in Marib.

Causes of Displacement: Conflict Takes Precedence

The IOM report identifies security concerns stemming from conflict as the primary reason for displacement, affecting 93% of cases. Economic factors contribute to 6% of the displacements, while the remaining percentage relates to climate risks and health issues. These figures underscore the immense pressures facing Marib, which serves as the main refuge for displaced individuals from various provinces, particularly those controlled by Houthi forces. The waves of displacement continue to rise amid ongoing violations and a lack of security.

Escalating Humanitarian Challenges

The report indicates that the influx of displaced individuals poses significant challenges to Marib’s infrastructure and essential services. Key challenges include:

  • Increased pressure on water and electricity networks.
  • Rising demand for healthcare and educational services.
  • Growing needs for shelter and food.
  • Expansion of camps amid limited humanitarian funding.

Furthermore, Marib has emerged as a critical hub for humanitarian relief efforts, given the large number of displaced individuals and their diverse needs. This situation necessitates sustainable interventions and ongoing international support.

Displacement from Ibb: A Sign of Deteriorating Conditions

The exodus of tens of thousands of families from Ibb to Marib clearly indicates a decline in security and economic conditions in Ibb. The province experiences rising Houthi violations, restrictions on freedoms, and a deterioration of essential services, prompting residents to seek safer and more stable environments.

Conclusion of the Report

The UN report confirms that Marib bears the brunt of internal displacement in Yemen. The ongoing conflict and lack of security in Houthi-controlled provinces drive the waves of displacement. As international humanitarian resources dwindle, the suffering of hundreds of thousands of families continues to escalate.
