Two Children Killed and One Injured in Houthi Landmine Explosion in Al-Bayda

On Thursday, two children lost their lives, and another sustained serious injuries due to a landmine explosion in the Al-Zahir district of Al-Bayda province. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by landmines in areas controlled by Houthi militants.

Incident Details

Reports indicate that three children were traversing the Dhimakhshab area when a landmine detonated. The explosion instantly killed 11-year-old Amir Saleh Qarwash and 12-year-old Najib Abdullah Al-Absi. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Abdulaziz Matloob Qarwash suffered severe injuries and required hospitalization for treatment.

Similar Previous Incidents

This tragedy follows a similar incident just a week earlier in the same district, where 15-year-old Saleh Ali Al-Abd Ali died while tending to sheep. His uncle, Salem Al-Abd, also lost his life in the same area, underscoring a disturbing pattern of repeated incidents claiming civilian lives.

Humanitarian Impact of Landmines

These ongoing incidents reveal the scale of the humanitarian disaster caused by landmines planted by Houthi militants. These explosives pose a daily threat to the lives of children, women, and civilians across several provinces. According to the Yemen Network for Rights and Freedoms, landmines have killed 2,316 civilians and injured 4,115 others, including women and children, from January 2017 to the end of January 2025. This grim tally includes 387 children and 412 women who lost their lives, along with 918 individuals who now face permanent disabilities, such as amputations and loss of vision.

The situation remains dire, and urgent action is needed to address the threat posed by these landmines and to protect vulnerable populations in Yemen.
