The United States has decided not to renew the free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.

United States Declines to Renew Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico

The United States has announced that it will not renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in its current form. Washington expressed its intention to continue negotiations with both partners to establish a more effective agreement that addresses existing shortcomings and reduces the U.S. trade deficit with Canada and Mexico.

Agreement Details and Ongoing Negotiations

The USMCA, established during former President Donald Trump’s administration, allows for renewal every 16 years before July 1. However, the U.S. refusal to extend the agreement means it will now renew on a year-to-year basis, subject to annual reviews unless one of the countries formally withdraws.

This announcement followed an online meeting among officials from the three nations, which did not yield the desired results. Jimson Greer, the White House trade representative, stated that the U.S. “will not accept the renewal of the agreement in its current form,” but will continue discussions with Canada and Mexico to resolve ongoing issues.

Trade and Economic Implications

Canada and Mexico rank among the United States’ top trading partners. However, they have also been among the first to feel the impact of tariffs imposed by Trump since his return to the White House in 2025. This situation arises amid accusations that both countries have not done enough to curb fentanyl trafficking and manage immigration flows.

According to the governments of Mexico and Ottawa, over 80% of their exports to the United States rely on this agreement, which shields them from tariffs. Thus, the future of the USMCA remains a critical element in their economic relations with Washington.

Future of Negotiations

In June, President Trump announced he did not intend to renew the agreement in its current form, prompting Washington to initiate a series of bilateral negotiations with Mexico and Ottawa. A new round of talks between the United States and Mexico is scheduled for July 20, while a date for the next round with Canada has yet to be determined.
