The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia following the conclusion of its transitional assistance mission on October 31. This marks the end of over three decades of UN missions aimed at promoting peace, state-building, governance, and reconciliation in the country.
Stefan Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, announced that the mission will conclude its two-year transitional phase and cease operations in accordance with Security Council Resolutions 2753 of 2024 and 2809 of 2025. This decision responds to a request from the Federal Government of Somalia.
Dujarric highlighted that the responsibilities assigned to the mission will transfer, as outlined in the transitional roadmap agreed upon by the Somali government and the United Nations. These responsibilities will shift to Somali institutions, UN agencies, and their respective funds and programs.
The UN Secretary-General praised the progress made in establishing peace and security in Somalia. He commended the resilience of the Somali people in facing challenges and the efforts directed towards the country’s recovery and stability.
Dujarric emphasized that the United Nations will continue to support Somalia through its agencies, funds, and programs. This support will occur in collaboration with Somali authorities, the African Union, and international partners to enhance peace, stability, human rights, and sustainable development.
