In a recent meeting, Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan engaged with Charles Frisbee, the Senior Humanitarian Advisor for Mine Action at the United Nations, and Yente Veldman, the First Secretary for Security and Rule of Law at the Dutch Embassy. The discussions focused on enhancing efforts to clear landmines in the region.
During the meeting, which also included Aref Al-Qahhtani, the Director of the Executive Center for Mine Action and Supervisor of the “Masam” project, Governor Shamsan emphasized the critical need for support in mine clearance operations. Taiz remains one of the most affected areas, suffering from numerous landmines, explosive devices, and projectiles planted by Houthi militias in residential neighborhoods, roads, farms, mountains, and valleys. These hazards have resulted in tragic casualties, particularly among women and children. The governor stressed the urgent need to protect citizens from this ongoing disaster.
Governor Shamsan praised the “Masam” project for its significant contributions to safeguarding lives. The initiative has played a vital role in removing thousands of landmines scattered across various residential and agricultural areas affected by Houthi militias.
Both Charles Frisbee and Yente Veldman expressed their commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at mine clearance. They outlined plans to implement several programs and activities in the upcoming phase, focusing on mine action, protection strategies, and the strategic plan to prevent the indiscriminate use of weapons. Additionally, they discussed various humanitarian and developmental programs to further support the region.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward ensuring the safety and well-being of the people in Taiz, as local and international stakeholders unite to address the pressing issue of landmines.
