Yemeni Parliament Speaker Participates in Global Parliamentary Conference in Geneva

On Tuesday, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, attended the opening session of the Sixth World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments. This significant event takes place in Geneva, Switzerland, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in collaboration with the United Nations. The conference theme is “A Troubled World: Parliamentary Cooperation and Pluralism for Peace, Justice, and Prosperity for All.”

Conference Goals and Participation

Running from July 29 to July 31, the conference gathers parliamentary leaders and representatives from various countries. Its primary aim is to enhance the parliamentary dimension of the United Nations’ work. Additionally, the conference seeks to activate partnerships between parliaments and international organizations to address shared global challenges.

Yemen’s Address and Key Issues

During the conference, the Speaker will deliver a speech representing Yemen. He plans to address the current national situation, highlighting the systematic crimes committed against the Yemeni people by Houthi militias. The Speaker will also discuss the severe economic and humanitarian crises that have deteriorated living conditions across various sectors in Yemen. Furthermore, he will express Yemen’s stance on the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and Palestine, including mass killings, human rights violations, and the dire humanitarian situation faced by Palestinians.

Meetings with International Delegates

While participating in the conference, the Speaker will meet with representatives from other parliaments and delegations. These discussions will focus on various issues of mutual interest, fostering international cooperation.

Arrival in Geneva

The Speaker arrived at Geneva International Airport, where he was welcomed by several members of the Yemeni Parliament, including Abdul Rahman Ma’azib, Ahmed Bahawirth, and Khaled Al-Rudfani. They were also greeted by Yemen’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Dr. Ali Majour, and his deputy, Dr. Hamid Omar.

This conference represents a crucial opportunity for Yemen to engage with the international community and advocate for pressing issues affecting its citizens.
