On Thursday, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, convened with the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif. The meeting focused on recent developments in Yemen and the broader region, with a strong emphasis on enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations.
During the discussions, al-Barakani commended the solid relationship between Yemen and the United Kingdom. He expressed his gratitude for the UK’s unwavering support of Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy. Al-Barakani highlighted the crucial role of the UK in the United Nations Security Council, particularly in condemning Houthi terrorist attacks that threaten civilians and jeopardize international navigation in both the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Al-Barakani provided a comprehensive overview of the critical situation in Yemen, detailing the catastrophic consequences of Houthi militia actions that have adversely impacted all aspects of life. He emphasized the ongoing violations of freedoms and rights in areas controlled by the Houthis, which have placed an immense burden on the Yemeni populace.
He asserted that the Houthi militia continues to advance Iranian agendas that endanger Yemen’s security and regional stability. These actions exacerbate the suffering of the Yemeni people and disrupt global trade. Al-Barakani noted that past peace efforts and negotiations have encountered significant obstacles due to the intransigence of the Houthi militia, which is backed by the Iranian regime.
The Speaker of Parliament stressed that overcoming the Houthi coup and restoring state institutions necessitates collective efforts and a unified international stance. He called for support for constitutional legitimacy in its essential battle against the Iranian-backed Houthi threat. Al-Barakani underscored the importance of regaining control of the capital, Sana’a, and reintegrating it into the Arab fold to restore security, stability, and peace.
Al-Barakani expressed deep appreciation for the support provided by Saudi Arabia to Yemen, recognizing their steadfast commitment to standing by the Yemeni people during challenging times. This support reflects the enduring historical and fraternal ties between the two nations and demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s dedication to Yemen’s security, stability, unity, and territorial integrity.
In response, Ambassador Abda Sharif reiterated the UK’s condemnation of Houthi escalations and their attacks on civilians. She highlighted the threats posed to international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, noting the obstruction of ships and risks to global trade.
Sharif pointed out the coordination between Iran and the Houthis in carrying out attacks and terrorist activities. She remarked that Iran utilizes the Houthis as a tool to escalate tensions and increase the costs of conflict and blockade. The repercussions of these actions extend beyond Yemen and the region, affecting global trade and maritime security.
The UK Ambassador reaffirmed her country’s ongoing support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy and its institutions. She committed to collaborating with international allies and partners to assist Yemen in overcoming its challenges and achieving lasting security and stability.
The meeting was attended by members of the Yemeni Parliament, including Salem Mansour Haidara, Shawqi Shamsan, and Khaled Al-Rudfani. This gathering underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the ongoing crisis in Yemen and highlights the commitment of both the UK and Yemen to work together towards a peaceful resolution.
