Dozens Dead and Hundreds Missing Following Landslides and Flooding Along China-Nepal Border

Tragic Mudslide and Flooding Impacting China and Nepal

Chinese authorities reported on Thursday that three individuals have lost their lives and 558 others are currently unaccounted for following a significant mudslide that struck the Qierong border port between China and Nepal, located in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwestern China.

Details of the Mudslide Incident

The mudslide occurred on Wednesday morning, originating from the Nepalese side and cascading down towards the Chinese port. This catastrophic event led to the severing of access roads, disruption of communications, and loss of power supply, as stated by the Emergency Management Office in Qierong County.

Extensive Rescue Operations Underway

In response to this disaster, Chinese officials activated a Level Two emergency response for biological disasters. Specialized teams have been dispatched to the affected site to coordinate rescue efforts and mitigate the risk of secondary disasters. However, rescuers are encountering significant challenges in reaching the impacted areas due to blocked roads and ongoing landslides.

Meanwhile, officials in Nepal reported that at least 162 people have died as a result of severe flooding that swept through border regions between Nepal and China. Reports indicate that hundreds of tourists and workers are missing, and travel has been suspended in several areas, underscoring the widespread impact of this calamity.

The situation remains critical as rescue operations continue in both nations. Authorities are working diligently to locate the missing individuals and provide assistance to those affected by this devastating event.
