Meeting Between Yemeni Parliament Speaker and UK Ambassador

Today, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, met with Abda Sharif, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Yemen. The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing recent developments in both regional and international contexts.

National Situation and Government Support

During the meeting, both parties reviewed the current national situation, emphasizing the need to support state institutions. They highlighted the importance of enhancing economic stability and improving essential services for citizens amid ongoing challenges.

Al-Barakani praised the efforts of the Prime Minister and the new government. He noted the spirit of cooperation and harmony among its members, as well as their commitment to upholding the constitution and the law. He stressed the importance of effective partnership between the legislative and executive branches.

Institutional Activation and International Cooperation

The Speaker pointed out that activating all state institutions is crucial for the government’s success and the implementation of necessary reforms. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and international partners to achieve tangible results and improve institutional performance.

Al-Barakani urged the United Nations and the international community to fulfill their responsibilities in supporting constitutional legitimacy. He called for a more proactive stance to pressure the Houthi militia to end the coup, restore state institutions, and achieve peace and stability.

National Unity and Security Forces

The Speaker emphasized the need to strengthen national unity and the cohesion of the armed forces and security agencies. He called for unified efforts to normalize security conditions, which would contribute to ending the coup and achieving security across the country.

Humanitarian Concerns and UK Support

Members of the Parliament present at the meeting expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen, attributing it to the violations committed by the Houthi militia. They highlighted the widespread suffering faced by the Yemeni people.

In response, Ambassador Sharif reaffirmed the UK’s continued support for constitutional legitimacy in Yemen. She emphasized the importance of humanitarian assistance in light of the dire circumstances faced by the Yemeni population. The ambassador expressed hope for the convening of the Parliament and the completion of constitutional processes, which would enhance institutional stability and drive reform efforts. She commended the performance of the Prime Minister and the new government.
