Minister Launches Workshop on Water Management Project in Aden

A New Initiative for Sustainable Development

Today, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, inaugurated a consultative workshop in Aden. This event focused on the “Improving Water and Irrigation Management in Wadi Tuban” project. The workshop, organized by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), included participation from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, along with various relevant stakeholders.

Transitioning from Emergency Response to Sustainable Development

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized that this project marks a significant transition from emergency response efforts to sustainable development. He highlighted the initiative’s alignment with a comprehensive vision for response, development, and peace. This project represents the second developmental intervention funded by the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, in partnership with UNDP and UNOPS, and in collaboration with local implementation partners. These partners include the Social Fund for Development, the Public Works Project, and the Ministry’s Project Implementation Unit.

Leveraging Local Expertise for Success

The minister noted that all executing partners possess deep knowledge of the local context and have demonstrated high efficiency in implementing service projects, particularly in water and sanitation. This local expertise enhances the project’s chances of success and ensures a lasting impact. He stressed that the project’s success hinges on the quality of its outputs, which are crucial for securing ongoing funding and achieving the desired impact. Al-Sharjabi also mentioned that the ministry has conducted a series of government meetings and consultations to effectively direct available funding toward developmental priorities.

Collaborative Planning and Evaluation

Al-Sharjabi pointed out that the workshop provides an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in planning and evaluation. He acknowledged the challenges facing the development sector, which intersect with issues of water, agriculture, energy, environment, and climate change. This complexity necessitates collective thinking to enhance adaptation, efficiency, and sustainability. He urged participants to develop a clear vision and practical outcomes that prioritize current needs and maximize the effectiveness of funding.

Understanding Project Goals and Implementation

The workshop featured presentations from specialists outlining the project’s objectives, components, and implementation mechanisms. These discussions aimed to foster a shared understanding and formulate realistic solutions that address the needs of the local community.
