Minister Discusses Water Resource Management with OECD Representatives

Virtual Meeting Focuses on Climate Adaptation and Economic Resilience

Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, held a virtual meeting with Mohamed Baraka, the OECD project manager for enhancing economic resilience in Yemen, and policy analyst Seema Farah. The discussion centered on strengthening collaboration in water resource management and adapting to climate change.

Key Issues in Water Management

During the meeting, participants addressed several critical issues related to water resource management. They highlighted the challenges facing the sector, including environmental policy difficulties and future cooperation prospects between the two parties.

Yemen’s Water Challenges

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized that Yemen faces significant and complex challenges in the water sector. These challenges stem from limited water resources, the increasing impacts of climate change, and recurring droughts. Additionally, the pressure on groundwater, inadequate infrastructure, and rising operational costs for water facilities exacerbate the situation.

Sustainable Solutions for Water Management

The minister outlined the ministry’s commitment to adopting sustainable solutions for improving water resource management. This includes expanding the use of renewable energy and enhancing water efficiency. He stressed the importance of integrating water, environmental, and climate change issues into economic recovery plans. Furthermore, he called for strengthening partnerships with international organizations to build institutional and technical capacities in the sector.

OECD’s Support for Yemen

In response, the OECD representative welcomed the collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Environment. He reaffirmed the organization’s support for the Yemeni government’s efforts in this vital sector. The OECD is prepared to implement programs aimed at enhancing institutional and technical capacities, ultimately improving the response to climate challenges and water scarcity.

This meeting marks a significant step towards addressing Yemen’s pressing water issues and fostering international cooperation for sustainable development.
