Minister of Water and Environment Inspects Water and Sanitation Projects in Aden

Today, Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, accompanied by a team from the World Bank led by Regional Director for Agriculture, Water, and Environment in the Middle East and North Africa, Ms. Miskrim Berhani, conducted a site visit to several water and sanitation projects in Aden. These projects receive funding from the World Bank through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Rehabilitation of Main Pumping Station

During the visit, Minister Al-Sharjabi and the international team, alongside representatives from UNOPS, reviewed the progress of the rehabilitation project for the main pumping station in the Al-Mualla district. They also examined the sewage pumping line connecting Al-Mualla and Khormaksar districts, which spans 3,700 meters and has a diameter of 630 mm made from polyethylene. The total cost of this project amounts to $3.85 million.

New Water Pumping Station in Khormaksar

The delegation then proceeded to the Al-Barzakh station in Khormaksar, where they received updates from the General Director of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in Aden, Engineer Mohammed Bakhebeira. He provided insights into the construction of a new water pumping station, which costs $1.765 million. This project includes building the station, digging cable trenches, and laying pipelines. Additionally, it involves electrical work and the supply and installation of eight horizontal pumps with flow rates of 230 liters/second and 100 liters/second.

Central Water Quality Testing Laboratory

Minister Al-Sharjabi and the World Bank team also assessed the operations of the central water quality testing laboratory managed by the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation. This laboratory plays a crucial role in monitoring water quality concerning salts and chemical elements, adhering to World Health Organization standards and Yemeni specifications. Furthermore, they reviewed the solar energy system project for the sewage pumping station in the Technology area of Al-Mansoura, which has an operational capacity of 132 kilowatts. This project, executed by Tesla, costs $91,145.

Commitment to Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the significance of World Bank-funded projects in enhancing the water and sanitation sectors and improving the sustainability of services provided to citizens. He highlighted the partnership between the government and the World Bank as a key element in development efforts, particularly in the water sector. The Minister expressed hope for increased funding to implement more projects aimed at serving the community by ensuring access to clean and safe water and a healthy environment.
