Minister Discusses New Cash Transfer Project with UNICEF Director

Sanaa, Yemen – Today, Dr. Mohammed Al-Zahouri, Yemen’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, met with Gianluca Bono, the Cash Transfer Program Director at UNICEF Yemen. The discussion centered around the new emergency cash transfer project, specifically focusing on targeting criteria and distribution methods for beneficiaries.

Importance of Coordination for Fair Distribution

Minister Al-Zahouri emphasized the need for effective coordination and agreement with the ministry through the Social Welfare Fund. He highlighted the goal of achieving fairness in distribution across various governorates. Additionally, he noted that the ministry’s leadership had submitted its technical vision for the distribution process. This vision was developed by the ministry’s technical team, which participated in the first workshop held in Jordan and the second in Cairo.

Addressing Economic Challenges

The minister pointed out that Yemen faces severe living conditions, rising poverty rates, soaring prices, and a declining purchasing power of the local currency. He stressed the necessity for increased funding and grants for the new project. The aim is to target the most impoverished groups and raise the financial amounts allocated to them.

UNICEF’s Commitment to Justice in Distribution

In response, Gianluca Bono affirmed that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor plays a crucial role in the new cash transfer project. He acknowledged the ministry’s responsibility and the ongoing discussions aimed at ensuring equitable distribution.

This collaborative effort between the Yemeni government and UNICEF aims to provide much-needed support to vulnerable populations in Yemen, addressing the pressing economic challenges they face.
