Minister of Social Affairs Discusses Support for Yemen with ILO Director-General

Today, Dr. Mohammed Al-Zahouri, Yemen’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, met with Gilbert Houngbo, the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The two leaders focused on providing support for projects and programs in Yemen while strengthening their partnership and cooperation across various sectors.

Challenges in Yemen’s Labor Market

During the meeting, Minister Al-Zahouri highlighted the significant challenges facing Yemen’s labor market. He attributed these issues to the ongoing conflict caused by the Houthi militia, which has severely damaged the economy and private sector. This conflict has resulted in thousands of people losing their jobs and sources of income. The minister emphasized that the Yemeni government has undertaken numerous efforts to improve the labor sector.

Call for International Support

Minister Al-Zahouri stressed the need for collective efforts and increased support to assist the government’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the labor market. He condemned the violations committed by the Houthi militia against employees of international agencies and organizations, calling for a firm stance from the international community. He also underscored the importance of relocating the main offices of international agencies to the temporary capital, Aden. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to providing all necessary support and facilitation for these organizations to operate effectively.

ILO’s Commitment to Yemen

In response, Director-General Houngbo assured that the ILO would implement several urgent projects in Aden this year. He committed to directing the regional office to work closely with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and to continue the partnership and coordination in all areas.

Acknowledgment of Government Efforts

The ILO leader praised the Yemeni government’s efforts to improve the labor market, expressing his full support for these initiatives. This collaboration aims to foster a more resilient and sustainable labor environment in Yemen.

The meeting marks a significant step towards enhancing international cooperation and support for Yemen’s labor sector, as the country continues to navigate the challenges posed by ongoing conflict and economic instability.
