Virtual Meeting Focuses on Stability and Development
Today, Minister of Local Administration, Engineer Badr Basalama, held a virtual meeting with Oliver Wells, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Unit at the German Bertelsmann Foundation, and Senior Advisor Sonia Neufelder. The discussion centered on enhancing the capabilities of local authorities and supporting stability and development efforts in various provinces.
Empowering Local Authorities
During the meeting, participants explored mechanisms to empower local authorities in managing their financial and administrative resources. The goal is to improve institutional performance in line with the ministry’s strategy to gradually grant administrative units broader powers through clear, practical programs.
Minister Basalama emphasized the importance of implementing programs and projects aimed at developing the skills of local authority leaders. This initiative aligns with the directives of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to strengthen administrative and financial decentralization, enabling administrative units to fulfill their developmental and service roles effectively.
Upcoming Workshop for Local Leaders
The minister announced plans to organize a specialized workshop for local authority leaders. This workshop will address several key topics related to enhancing the local governance system. The objective is to generate actionable insights that will help address existing challenges in the provinces and prepare them for the gradual transfer of financial and administrative powers. This approach aims to enhance institutional efficiency and administrative readiness, forming part of a comprehensive reform vision that includes developing a performance evaluation system for local authorities.
Bertelsmann Foundation’s Support
Oliver Wells expressed the Bertelsmann Foundation’s readiness to support the Ministry of Local Administration’s plans. He praised the reform initiatives aimed at strengthening local authority capabilities. Wells also indicated the foundation’s willingness to contribute its expertise in institutional capacity building and support local stability and development, ultimately improving the performance of local authorities and enhancing their role in achieving development and stability.
