The Minister of Information congratulates the successful interception of a large drug shipment linked to the Houthis.

Major Drug Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Al-Wadiah Border Crossing

Minister Praises Security Forces’ Success

The Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, commended the security forces at the Al-Wadiah border crossing for successfully thwarting a significant drug smuggling attempt. Authorities intercepted over 1,005,300 narcotic pills concealed within a truck destined for Saudi Arabia. This operation linked the smuggling attempt to networks associated with the Iranian-backed Houthi militia.

Significant Security Achievement

In a press statement, Al-Eryani described the operation as a major security achievement. He emphasized that it reflects the ongoing efforts of security agencies to combat cross-border threats posed by the Houthi militia. He noted that this smuggling attempt occurred at a critical time, following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, which had previously served as a primary route for "Captagon" trafficking to Gulf countries.

Exploiting Regional Instability

Al-Eryani highlighted that the Houthis have taken advantage of the power vacuum left by the Syrian regime’s downfall. They have intensified their criminal activities, transforming Yemen into a new launch point for drug trafficking to neighboring countries. This shift exacerbates security threats and worsens the regional situation.

Link to Local Drug Manufacturing

The minister pointed out that multiple reports indicate the Houthi militia’s control over several pharmaceutical factories in the capital, Sana’a. They have reportedly converted parts of these facilities into Captagon production labs. This tactic mirrors the methods used by the former Syrian regime and Hezbollah in Lebanon to finance their terrorist activities through drug trade, disregarding the devastating impact on communities.

Highlighting Malicious Tactics

Al-Eryani underscored that this incident reveals the nefarious tactics employed by the Houthis to fund their military operations and terrorist activities. He noted the close ties between the militia and international smuggling networks operating under Iranian sponsorship, which heightens the threat these networks pose to local, regional, and international security.

Broader Implications of Drug Trafficking

The minister stressed that drug trafficking serves not only as a funding mechanism for the Houthis but also as a tool for political extortion. This strategy aims to bolster their military and economic power, ultimately destabilizing the entire region.

Call for International Action

Al-Eryani urged the international community to take a firm stance against this criminal behavior that threatens regional and global security. He asserted that these security challenges necessitate increased cooperation and coordination among regional countries to combat cross-border criminal activities, particularly drug trafficking, which directly impacts national security and community health, as well as the future of generations.
