Minister Launches National Food Safety Committee in Aden

A Step Towards Enhanced Food Security

Today, in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Industry and Trade, Mohamed Al-Ashwal, inaugurated the National Committee for Food Safety. This initiative aims to strengthen food security, a crucial pillar for the stability and progress of communities.

First Meeting Highlights Committee’s Role

The inaugural meeting followed the establishment decision No. (1) for the year 2025, in accordance with Prime Ministerial Decision No. (295) of 2010. During this session, members presented an overview of the committee’s objectives and the essential tasks it must undertake in the upcoming phase.

Emphasizing the Importance of Food Safety

Minister Al-Ashwal emphasized the committee’s vital role in providing scientific advice to the government on all matters related to food safety and quality. He stated, “This committee is crucial for ensuring food security, which is fundamental for societal stability.”

Commitment to Local Food Sector Development

The Minister highlighted the ministry’s commitment to developing the food sector. This includes promoting local production and ensuring the availability of essential imported goods. He stressed the importance of collaboration with relevant food regulatory bodies to deliver safe and healthy food products to consumers.

Strategic Goals for Food Safety

Engineer Hadeed Al-Mas, the Executive Director of the Authority and Chair of the Committee, noted that the committee’s formation aligns with the Authority’s strategy to unify food safety requirements. This strategy includes adopting standards from the Codex Alimentarius, enhancing food quality and safety, and improving supply chain efficiency for food products.

Key Recommendations for Supporting Local Products

The meeting concluded with several key recommendations. Participants emphasized the need to protect national products and urged responsible authorities to support local production. They proposed conducting training sessions and educational workshops for local manufacturers to ensure that national products meet global standards. This initiative aims to open international markets for local goods. Additionally, the meeting called for the activation of the Consumer Protection Association.

By establishing this committee, the government takes a significant step toward ensuring food safety and quality, ultimately benefiting consumers and the local economy.
