The Minister of Industry and Trade emphasizes the importance of strengthening bilateral relations with the World Trade Organization.

Focus on Technical Support and Capacity Building

In a recent meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister of Industry and Trade, Mohammed Al-Ashwal, emphasized the need to enhance Yemen’s bilateral relations with the World Trade Organization (WTO). He pointed out the critical barriers that have hindered technical support and capacity building for Yemen from the WTO. Al-Ashwal revealed that the Yemeni government is actively working on ratifying the Trade Facilitation Agreement, which aims to streamline trade processes.

Significant Role of the WTO in Trade and Investment

During his discussions with Angela Ellard, Deputy Director-General of the WTO, Al-Ashwal acknowledged the organization’s vital role in providing technical assistance and capacity building for import and export operations. He stressed the importance of creating a conducive investment environment. The meeting, attended by Prime Minister’s Advisor Ambassador Mujib Othman and Yemen’s Deputy Permanent Representative in Geneva, Dr. Hamid Omar, also addressed the scheduling of Yemen’s subscription payments. The parties aim to agree on a financial plan that could lead to lifting restrictions on Yemen and facilitating technical assistance, workshops, and training sessions that the WTO offers to member states.

WTO’s Commitment to Supporting Yemen

In response, Ellard welcomed the proposals put forth by Yemen. She expressed the WTO’s understanding of the challenges Yemen faces, particularly regarding payment difficulties. Ellard assured that the organization is committed to providing all necessary support to ensure Yemen benefits from the trade facilitation assistance and consultations available.

Potential Benefits of Trade Facilitation Agreement

Ellard highlighted the significant advantages Yemen could gain from ratifying the Trade Facilitation Agreement. She mentioned that the WTO stands ready to assist Yemen in leveraging its fishery resources, contingent upon the ratification of the Fisheries Support Agreement. This support could play a crucial role in enhancing Yemen’s economic stability and growth.

In conclusion, the discussions reflect a mutual commitment to fostering stronger ties and ensuring Yemen’s access to vital trade resources and support through the WTO.
