Minister of Agriculture Discusses One Health Approach with WHO Expert

In a significant meeting held today in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Major General Salem Al-Saqtri, engaged with Dr. Hanadi Awad, a World Health Organization (WHO) expert on the One Health approach. The discussion focused on collaborative efforts between the ministry and the WHO, aiming to coordinate sectoral work to effectively implement the One Health strategy. This approach integrates health, environment, agriculture, and fisheries to combat zoonotic diseases that affect both humans and animals.

Key Insights on One Health Project

During the meeting, Minister Al-Saqtri received detailed explanations from WHO specialists regarding the One Health project funded by the World Bank. They outlined the project’s objectives, including enhancing livestock health in Yemen and ensuring disease-free status. The discussions also covered the selection criteria for provinces involved in the project and the anticipated outcomes.

The project aims to train healthcare and veterinary professionals, conduct awareness campaigns, and perform surveys to identify and combat zoonotic diseases. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of a quick response to outbreaks, ensuring the safety of livestock for local consumption and facilitating exports to neighboring countries in compliance with their health regulations.

Participation in International Conferences

The meeting also highlighted the ministry’s active participation in international conferences and discussions aimed at supporting the livestock sector and related industries, such as dairy production. Minister Al-Saqtri’s involvement in these events underscores Yemen’s commitment to improving its agricultural and livestock sectors.

This collaboration between the Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture and the World Health Organization represents a vital step towards enhancing public health and agricultural sustainability in Yemen.
