The Minister of Agriculture discusses ways to support Yemen’s agriculture and fisheries sectors with the Japanese ambassador.

Minister of Agriculture Discusses Strengthening Agricultural and Fisheries Cooperation with Japan

Today, Yemen’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Irrigation, Salem Al-Saqtri, held a virtual meeting with Japan’s Ambassador to Yemen, Youninichi Nakashima. The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in agriculture and fisheries.

Strengthening Yemen-Japan Relations

Minister Al-Saqtri praised the longstanding relationship between Yemen and Japan, which has spanned decades. He emphasized that this solid foundation paves the way for promising future partnerships that benefit both nations.

Challenges Facing Yemen’s Agriculture and Fisheries

During the meeting, Al-Saqtri outlined the significant challenges facing Yemen’s agricultural and fisheries sectors. He highlighted the ongoing war, which has persisted for nearly a decade, as a primary concern. Additionally, he addressed the impacts of climate change, including hurricanes and floods, as well as the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has also affected wheat imports and contributed to rising food prices due to escalating tensions in the Red Sea.

Economic Importance of Agriculture and Fisheries

The minister pointed out that over 70% of Yemen’s workforce relies on agriculture and fisheries for their livelihoods. Therefore, he stressed the urgent need to increase support for these sectors to mitigate the cumulative damages they face.

Acknowledging Japan’s Support

Al-Saqtri expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This assistance has included the establishment of marine science research centers and the provision of specialized research vessels since the 1980s, significantly contributing to the development of the fisheries sector. He called for expanding developmental interventions to include investment support in agriculture and fisheries, enhancing the ministry’s research centers, and implementing projects to empower rural women.

Japan’s Commitment to Climate-Affected Nations

Ambassador Nakashima reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting developing countries affected by climate change, including Yemen. He underscored the importance of strengthening collaborative efforts to intensify developmental initiatives. Nakashima noted that upcoming meetings will focus on identifying priority interventions in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

This meeting marks a significant step towards fostering cooperation between Yemen and Japan, aiming to address pressing challenges in agriculture and fisheries while enhancing economic stability in Yemen.
