Minister of Agriculture Discusses Rehabilitation of Fishing Port in Aden

Today, in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Major General Salem Al-Saqtri, met with Tom Trud, the Director of the Fishing Port Rehabilitation Project from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). They were joined by teams from two contracted companies responsible for conducting technical studies for the project and salvaging sunken vessels from the port basin. The discussions focused on several key issues related to the rehabilitation of the fishing port and the arrangements for restoring the 530-meter-long dock designated for fishing vessels of various sizes.

Progress Update on Rehabilitation Efforts

During the meeting, Minister Al-Saqtri received updates from the UNDP team and the two companies regarding the progress made in all phases of the construction and technical studies. These efforts aim to restore the port’s dock and related infrastructure. The Minister emphasized the need to expedite the rehabilitation project and adhere to the established timeline. He highlighted the importance of improving the port’s infrastructure to promote sustainable development within the fishing sector.

Formation of a Joint Engineering Team

As a result of the meeting, participants agreed to form a joint engineering team. This team will include both international and local experts from the Ministry and the UNDP. Their primary task will be to review the technical studies prepared by the consulting company. This collaborative approach aims to facilitate a smoother execution of the project and address any potential obstacles that may arise during implementation.

On-Site Inspection of Ongoing Operations

Following the meeting, Minister Al-Saqtri, accompanied by the UNDP team and the consulting company, conducted a site visit to the fishing port. They inspected ongoing operations to salvage remaining sunken vessels, which have hindered the rehabilitation and operation of the port for many years. This hands-on approach underscores the Minister’s commitment to overcoming challenges and ensuring the successful revitalization of the fishing port.

The discussions and actions taken today reflect a strong commitment to enhancing the fishing sector’s infrastructure in Yemen. The rehabilitation of the fishing port in Aden represents a crucial step toward achieving sustainable development and improving the livelihoods of those dependent on this vital industry.
